Burrough Hill Hillfort

Burrough Hill is the finest viewpoint in east Leicestershire - a big Iron Age hillfort on a promontory of the High Leicestershire ridge, its ramparts standing proud above the Wreake valley with fifty-mile views on a clear day. It's a Leicestershire County Council country park, so there's a proper car park (small charge), a surfaced approach and lots of space, and the earthwork ramparts make a genuinely striking top-down subject - the ditch-and-bank ring reads beautifully from 80-100m. Because it's a country park, the honest position is that the council can restrict drone use and you should fly considerately around the many dog-walkers, families and the occasional grazing sheep; there's no explicit hard ban advertised, but treat access as by tolerance and be ready to pack up if asked. The hilltop is open and grassy - ideal, wind-clean TOAL - though genuinely exposed, so mind gusts on the ramparts. Airspace is easy: no FRZ nearby, quiet Class G, with East Midlands well to the west. Come at either end of the day for raking light that models the ramparts and long shadows across the ridge-and-furrow fields below. Skylarks nest in the grassland in spring, so keep height.
