Brent Tor

Brent Tor is a volcanic plug on the north western edge of Dartmoor, crowned by the tiny medieval church of St Michael de Rupe, and it makes an unforgettable drone subject rising abruptly from rolling farmland with the moor behind. On a clear day you can see across to Bodmin Moor and the sweep of west Devon, and a low orbit of the church against the sky is genuinely striking. Be aware of the caveat: the tor sits on Dartmoor commons, where national park byelaws discourage recreational drone flying, so this is a fly considerately or not at all spot. Keep well away from walkers visiting the church, avoid grazing livestock and ponies, and do not fly on busy weekends or during services. Take off from the small parking area or lane below rather than among people on the summit. Airspace is not an issue, as you are far from any flight restriction zone, with Exeter Airport more than 40km to the east. The hill is exposed and thermals and gusts can be lively, so expect the aircraft to work. Early morning midweek gives you the site to yourself, soft light on the church, and the best chance of calm air before the wind picks up.
