Black Rock Sands (Morfa Bychan)

Black Rock Sands is one of the easiest drone launches in north-west Wales because you can drive your car straight onto two miles of firm, flat sand. Set up on the tailgate, take off from the beach and you have uninterrupted views across Tremadog Bay to the Llyn Peninsula one way and the Moelwynion and Yr Wyddfa massif the other. Low-tide reveals huge rippled sand flats that look superb in raking evening light, and the caves and limestone outcrop at the western headland give a natural subject for orbits. Because the beach is so wide, keeping 50m from uninvolved people is realistic even in summer, though July and August weekends bring a lot of parked cars, kite buggies and the odd jet ski launching, so fly early or late. Wind off the Irish Sea is the main gotcha: there is zero shelter, and sub-250g quads get bounced around badly on anything over 15mph. Watch salt spray on lenses and land on a mat or the car roof, because fine sand gets into motors fast. Winter flying here is exceptional — empty beach, snow on the Eryri skyline, and long golden sunsets straight down the runway of sand.
