Barnham Cross Common

If you want the open, sandy Breckland heath aesthetic, this is the least-compromised legal option, but it comes with a serious seasonal condition. Barnham Cross Common on Thetford's southern edge is Thetford Town Council land managed for its rare Breckland habitat, not a National Trust or Wildlife Trust reserve, and no drone ban was found, so take-off from the amenity grass near the car park is realistic. Airspace is the win here: despite Breckland being ringed by military bases, the common sits outside every FRZ, with RAF Honington around 7km southwest and Lakenheath about 13km away. The catch is that the common is both a Local Nature Reserve and an SSSI, and it's classic stone-curlew, woodlark and nightjar country. Those are Schedule 1 birds, and disturbing them is a criminal offence, so flying between roughly March and August is genuinely risky. Treat this as a September-to-February spot, launch from the mown grass near the car park rather than out on the open heath core, keep well clear of any birds, and keep low flights off the sensitive interior. Done in winter, you get atmospheric heath-and-pine light, the Little Ouse nearby, and quiet solitude. Fly it thoughtfully and only in the off-season.
