Barbury Castle

Barbury Castle is a superb Iron Age hillfort on the Marlborough Downs, ringed by deep ramparts and sitting right on the Ridgeway with commanding views over the Wiltshire vale toward Swindon. Crucially for pilots, it's a Country Park owned and run by Swindon Borough Council - not National Trust - with a proper car park, so take-off is on solid ground and the site is already well used by responsible drone flyers. The twin oval ramparts are a beautiful subject from directly overhead, especially with low-angle light picking out the ditches. It sits clear of controlled airspace - the former Wroughton airfield nearby is now a museum store with no FRZ - but note the MOD's Salisbury Plain danger area lies well to the south, so keep your flying here on the downs. Paragliders and hang-gliders sometimes use the scarp, and the Ridgeway brings walkers and horse riders, so maintain a good lookout and avoid overflying people. The downs are open and breezy, with wind lifting over the ramparts. A crisp, clear day gives the best visibility across the vale; early or late sun raking across the earthworks brings the fort's structure to life. A reliable, legal, high-view Wiltshire spot.
