Aston Rowant NNR

The Aston Rowant escarpment gives you one of the great Chilterns views, a steep chalk-and-juniper scarp falling away to the Oxford plain, famously split by the M40 cutting where red kites wheel almost constantly overhead. For a pilot the reward is that layered scarp light and the kites, plus the Ridgeway threading along the top; it is a genuinely different subject from the region's beaches and open downs. Two real caveats keep this at caution. It is a National Nature Reserve managed by Natural England, so drone use is discouraged rather than freely permitted; expect to need consent, launch only from the car park or a hard track, and stay well off the fragile chalk sward and juniper. And the red kites are the whole draw but also a hazard and a welfare concern: keep a respectful distance, never chase or hover near birds, and abandon a flight if they take an interest in the aircraft. There is a small NNR car park off Hill Road near Christmas Common. Airspace is clear, with no FRZ overhead and RAF Benson about 11km west, though you are beneath busy London-approach airspace high above, which does not affect low visual-line-of-sight flying. Fly early for calm air, softer scarp light and quieter trails.
