Ampthill Park

Ampthill Park is a historic 300-acre expanse of open parkland on the Greensand Ridge in Bedfordshire, long a favourite for kite flyers thanks to its high, breezy plateau and sweeping views north across the Marston Vale. The open grassland, avenues of ancient trees, and the Katherine's Cross monument give varied subjects, and the elevation means fine long-distance aerial vistas on a clear day. As a Bedford Borough public park rather than National Trust or reserve land, it offers genuinely open flying space, and its size makes it easy to find a quiet area away from people. Airspace-wise, Cranfield Airport lies about 9km to the northwest, so you are outside its flight restriction zone, but Cranfield is an active airfield with training traffic, so keep a check on it; Luton is around 17km south and well clear. The main cautions are shared use and terrain: the park is popular with walkers, dog walkers, families and, on windy days, kite and model flyers, so choose a calm early slot, launch from open grass well away from the car park and paths, and be courteous to other airspace users on gusty days. The ridge is exposed, so winds can be strong. Parking is off Woburn Street. A reliable, elevated inland option that covers Bedfordshire in the region.
