Alnmouth Beach

A broad, clean sweep of golden sand backed by marram dunes where the River Aln meets the North Sea, framed by the pastel houses of Alnmouth village on its headland. This is one of Northumberland's most flyable beaches: wide open sightlines, no cliffs to shadow your signal, and enough space to keep well clear of walkers even in summer. The estuary mouth, the colourful village and the distant Coquet Island make strong compositions, and low sun rakes beautiful texture across the ripples at either end of the day. Launch from the firm sand below the high-tide line rather than the fragile dunes. The main constraint here is RAF Boulmer just a few kilometres south, a radar and search-and-rescue station with occasional low-level helicopter movements, so keep a constant listening watch and land promptly if you hear rotors. Nesting and roosting birds gather on the estuary flats, so give the water's edge and any flocks a wide berth. The beach sits outside any airport flight restriction zone. Winds off the sea can be brisk and gusty near the dunes, so watch your battery margins. Overall a relaxed, legal and rewarding coastal spot for a hobbyist.
