Almscliffe Crag

A dramatic knot of Millstone Grit erupting from farmland between Harrogate and Otley, Almscliff (or Almscliffe) is Yorkshire's most celebrated gritstone bouldering crag and a natural viewpoint over Lower Wharfedale. The weathered blocks, fissures and the whaleback profile against a big sky make a striking subject, and from height you get the crag as a lone island in a patchwork of fields with the Wharfe valley beyond. Access is by the roadside on Crag Lane, then a short walk up, note the crag sits on private farmland where climber access is long-tolerated rather than a formal right, so be courteous, close gates and avoid livestock. Climbers are usually on the rock, so keep well clear of people and never fly directly over boulderers. The key airspace check: Leeds Bradford Airport's FRZ lies roughly 10km southwest, so you are outside it, but verify on a map app before every flight as you are in its general vicinity. Nearest airport is therefore Leeds Bradford. Ground-nesting birds and the exposed, wind-prone position mean spring care and a calm day are both wise. Best in low winter light or a clear evening when the grit glows warm and casts long shadows.
