Is FPV legal in the UK?
Yes, with one key condition: because a headset blocks your direct view, you must have a competent observer beside you maintaining visual line of sight with the drone and airspace. All normal Open-category rules also apply.
Do I need a Flyer ID for FPV?
Almost certainly yes — since January 2026 any drone 100g or over needs the free CAA Flyer ID test, and that covers virtually every FPV quad. Camera-equipped drones 100g+ also need an Operator ID (£12.34/year).
Should I learn on a simulator first?
Absolutely. FPV in Acro mode has a steep learning curve, and simulator crashes are free. Twenty hours in a sim will save you that much in props and frames.
Why not just buy a used racing quad?
Used can be great value, but batteries age badly and crash damage hides well. For a first FPV drone, a ready-to-fly kit with a warranty is the safer £500.
